Two kilometers away from todays town of Pliska are the remains of the imposing construction of the first capital of Danubian Bulgaria, founded in 681 by Khan Asparoukh. It existed until 893 – 894 when the capital was moved to Veliki Preslav (44 km southwards) by Tsar Simeon the Great.Nowadays the region is one of the main tourist attraction in northeastern Bulgaria and a leading motive for the development of the infrastructure.
